Rex has a family history in Barbershop music, with both parents, three siblings, and his wife all life-long Barbershop singers as well. He has coached choruses, quartets, and individuals, and has been a section leader in three different choruses.
Rex writes:
I was born into Barbershop. My father was a Barbershop coach, chorus director, and quartet champion — before he met my mother. My mother was a Barbershop and Sweet Adeline (female version of Barbershop) coach, chorus director, and Sweet Adeline quartet champion before she met my father. They met, fell in love, got married — and had 4 kids — 2 girls and 2 boys, but that makes 4. We were called "The Minor Chords" quartet, and I've been singing on Barbershop and Sweet Adeline shows ever since. One sister is a professional jazz singer, one sister is a Sweet Adeline chorus director and quarteter, and my brother is also singing in Barbershop in a chorus and quartets.
I'm 49 at this writing, and have been barbershopping all my life. I started out as a bass, but made a switch to tenor, because all the tenors in the chorus (at the time) all left in the summer for their vacations. I've been primarily singing tenor now for a good 25 years, though because of my family influence, I'm a 4 part guy.
I've been in several barbershop choruses (up to 2 at the same time), tons of quartets (up to 7 once at the same time), and in a few college groups (in my youth). I've coached both choruses and quartets, as well as individual voices. I married a Sweet Adeline, who is also a quarteter and a chorus director in Barbershop, whose mother was also a Sweet Adeline, and whose father is a Barbershopper (a Society judge, coach, chorus director, teacher, and a quartet champ). I have been involved with most levels of chorus board positions, and Section Leader of 3 different choruses.
